There are very few things that one can’t find in the ever-bustling city of New York; and for those of us who have sweet tooth’s to satisfy, the sky is the limit in NYC. My sister (who is somewhat of a bakery connoisseur) has weighed in with her favorites, many of which are not that well known. Below you will find a curated list of some of NYC’s hottest bakeries. Consider this an Insider’s guide, and make sure to check one out– you won’t regret it!
Founded in 2012, Noglu rose to popularity in Paris before making it’s way to New York’s Upper East Side. This bakery offers a charming atmosphere and several gluten-free delights. The chocolate brioche and lemon meringue tart are both crowd pleasers.
Two Little Red Hens
Known for it’s delicious custom cakes, Two Little Red Hens is an old-fashioned American bakery located on the Upper East Side. Take a visit to Two Little Red Hens and order their famous Brooklyn Blackout cake for a birthday or another special occasion. Their custom cakes are amazing- their Red Velvet is off the charts!
Cupcake Market NYC
For those of you who like to keep up with Pop-Culture, you’ve probably seen pictures of the cute, celebrity inspired cookies made in the Lower East Side at Cupcake Market. Drake, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West are just a few of the celebs Cupcake Market has turned into intricate delicacies. However, it’s the delicious buttercream cakes at Cupcake Market that steal the show. Topped with large, intricate flowers made with their famous buttercream frosting, these cakes are perfect for a birthday party or a bridal shower.
Lady M isn’t just a Bakery, it’s an experience. Founded in Japan, these beautiful store fronts house the famous Mille Crepe Cakes which are available in flavors such as Green Tea, Coconut, and Original to name a few. Lady M. is the perfect bakery to hit for coffee and dessert on a Saturday Afternoon. With several locations scattered around the city, it shouldn’t be hard to give one of the desserts at Lady M. a try.
Erin McKenna’s Baby Cakes
Perfect for those with allergies to dairy, gluten, or soy, Erin McKenna’s Baby Cakes offers a wide range of baked goods—chocolate chip cookies, whoopee pies, and birthday cakes included. They always have a great list of thanksgiving and Christmas desserts. Even those without allergies will love their sweet icing and variety of options to chose from.
Momofuku Milk Bar
Conceptualized by the renowned, Christina Tosi, Momofuku Milk Bar is a unique bakery made famous by its “Crack Pie,” and “Compost Cookies. Their “Naked Layer” cakes come in a variety of flavors, my favorite being the birthday cake. Momofuku also ships their goodies placing them on my list of go-to gifts for friends living outside of New York.
One of my favorite foods in the world is the Greek specialty, Spanakopita—a savory filo pie made with spinach and feta cheese. Pi Bakery makes a delicious Spanakopita along with many other sweet and savory delights including, but not limited to rice pudding!
By now, most people know that Breads Bakery has the best chocolate babka around. If you haven’t tried it, it is a must! However, Breads Bakery also offers a delicious chocolate concord cake. This soft, fluffy, mousse layered with a crisp meringue is absolutely remarkable, and it’s only available at Breads Bakery’s Lincoln center outpost!
Bebe Bakes is one my personal favorites as far as custom cakes go. Beth, the creative owner at Bebe Cakes, is responsible for bringing customers’ visions into fruition by creating unforgettable custom cakes. I’ve had many custom birthday cakes made by her and not only is each one a work of art, they are delicious. If you can think of it, Beth can make it and deliver it to your front door.
Which is your favorite?
