I sat in on a Spring Trends discussion with Linda Fargo, the Senior Vice President of The Fashion Office and Director of Women’s Fashion and Store Presentation at Bergdorf Goodman. Living in Manhattan or the Northeast, Spring can be very short with a few warm days sprinkled into an extended winter. Spring and Summer tend to meet sometime around or after Memorial Day so spring trends become summer trends. Here are a few highlights including what we should continue to expect to see as we head into Fall. (NB: edits and highlighting are by the author)
Express Yourself- Do It Your Way- Spring is a beautiful season, quite romantic. Designers like Alessandro Michele at Gucci have shown everyone up with a lot of personality and romantic items. It’s the season of “Expressing Yourself” – freer, not so match-y, retro chic, vintage clothing, fantasy. There is the “Fair Maiden” look with bell sleeves and yokes If you’d like to try this look, get a blouse for a smaller commitment. Try something in the trend. Experiment with something out of the box and fun.
Extraordinary Lace- Lace is never out, but there are seasons where its particularly in. A sister of lace is eyelet- very fresh and white.
The New Nomads– A little bit tribal, fringe, raffia which also plays into accessories. Isabel Marant is a good designer to check out for this trend. She is a bit of a cult designer and people are very devoted to her designs. She always has something bohemian and easy. Fringe is still flying, still in, feels great. Crochet/ Macramé are extensions of this tribal feeling.
Shirting and Shirtdresses- This season shirting is reshaped. There are Eyelet, and Dressy versions. Check out ones from Proenza Schouler.
The Cold Shoulder- A must have this season is the off the shoulder top. In prior years you would see one shoulder, this year it’s the double shoulder. You can find this at all different price points.
Denim- Denim is never out but this season is better than ever! Denim pants with the fringed cut-off bottoms are particularly great. You’ll see this trend going into the fall as well.
Out of the Boudoir- This is the pajama trend, particularly in satin. Some you wear together, some as separates (Linda wears her tops as jackets). You are seeing bedroom slippers or slides everywhere that you wear out of the bedroom.
The Slip Dress- Tread lightly here but have a piece- you can layer it. Doesn’t have to be worn alone. Lace and blush colors are particularly in for slip dresses.
The Wide Leg Cropped Pant- Culottes! You can wear them with boots, flats, heeled sandals and also wear many tops with them. They are very versatile and flattering on many different body shapes.
The Mid Length Skirt- There are no rules on skirt length right now. Wear what is most flattering to you. Lengths have dropped down- the most current length is the midi. Look to Prabal Gurung for some great skirts. Also, the knife pleat has been in for a few seasons and for fall, it is a great look that should be in high demand.
The Skinny Rib Knit- many women are so flattering in rib knits. You can layer them under things as well.
The Embellished Statement Bag with embroidery and applique, The Guitar Strap- Valentino added the guitar strap and this will carry into Fall, The Top Handle Bag- very easy and feminine, The Saddle Bag- (Chloe has a great one), and The chain handle bag.
Look at me shoes, Lace up shoes- the tie up shoe is the IT shoe of the season (look to Aquazzura), Chunky heels, Easy slides- (Check out ones from Mansur Gavriel), Flat sandals
Statement sunglasses –Costume-y, look at me sunglasses, Multiple rings- Ear climbing is now moving across the hand with multiple rings, and Long necklaces
Some other notes:
Exuberant Color –While there is no particular color of the season, watch Brick/ Terra Cotta color into fall- (my note – already starting to see this crop up a lot for Pre-Fall/Fall) Stripes also very prevalent.
Bomber: The jacket of the moment. Some are very collectible. There will be many of these going into the fall.
White and Off White- great summer palette cleanser. Crisp white, off white. One way to perk up your look is through white accessories.
